The Jax Beach day bag: 12 things worth packing

From sunglasses to a mini car vacuum for the sand, here is what we pack for a full day by the pier.

Man by the beach railing with palm trees

Jacksonville Beach has one of the easiest beach days in Florida: park, walk to the sand, and stay until the sun drops behind you. The trick is a bag that covers the whole day without weighing a ton. This is the list our team actually uses.

The essentials

  1. Water, then more water. Two refillable bottles per person, frozen the night before.
  2. Reef-friendly sunscreen. Reapply every two hours and after every swim.
  3. Polarized sunglasses. They cut glare off the water so you can actually see the surfers.
  4. A lightweight towel. Quick-dry fabric beats a thick cotton towel that stays damp all afternoon.
  5. Shoes for hot sand. Barefoot-style shoes are light and easy to rinse.
  6. A small first-aid pouch. Bandages, antiseptic wipes and something for jellyfish stings.

Local tip: check the flag at the lifeguard stand when you arrive. A purple flag means dangerous marine life has been spotted.

Nice to have

  1. A shade tent or umbrella for the hours between noon and 3pm.
  2. A zip bag for phones so sand and spray stay out.
  3. Snacks that don't melt: fruit, nuts and granola bars.
  4. A trash bag. Leave the beach cleaner than you found it.
  5. A mini car vacuum for the sand that always makes it home.
  6. A light layer for when the sea breeze picks up in the evening.
